An open-circuit cooling tower is a heat exchanger that can cool water by direct contact with air. The heat transfer from water to air is partially carried out by sensible heat transfer, but mainly by latent heat transfer (part of the evaporation of water into the air), which allows the cooling temperature to be lower than the ambient temperature.
